Since the Foundation’s establishment in 2014, we’ve witnessed firsthand how transformative our work has been for Zanzibar’s visual artists. What began as a small initiative has grown into a lifeline for emerging talent – offering exhibitions, awards, mentorship, and training that have opened doors many never imagined possible.
Year after year, we’ve seen young artists gain confidence, develop their craft, and step onto national and international stages with work that reflects the depth and beauty of Zanzibari culture.
These projects don’t just support creativity – they change lives, strengthen communities, and preserve the artistic heritage that makes these islands so extraordinary.
The Emerson Zanzibar Foundation’s Film Award is a sharp, high‑impact boost for Zanzibar’s creative scene, spotlighting standout local filmmakers whose stories capture the islands’ culture, energy, and social realities. Given in partnership with the Zanzibar International Film Festival, it has become a launchpad for rising directors, offering recognition that translates into real opportunities and wider visibility. More than a trophy, it’s a catalyst pushing Zanzibari talent onto regional and international screens while strengthening the archipelago’s growing film ecosystem.
Partner with the Emerson Zanzibar Foundation and help bring Zanzibar’s film making and culture to life. Your sponsorship supports exhibitions, performances, workshops and emerging creative talent while demonstrating your commitment to the island’s vibrant cultural future.

The festival’s extensive programme includes film, performance, music, workshops and children’s events, as well as the large-scale outdoor films in the amphitheatre at the Old Fort for which the festival is renowned.
