The award
The board of the Emerson’s Zanzibar Foundation is delighted to announce its sixth Music Award 2022, held as part of the Sauti za Busara Music Festival 2022.
The award for this year is intended for women singers, under the theme ‘Women Arise’. This follows the Sauti za Busara 2022 theme of ‘Amplifying Women’s Voices’.
The theme
Young and gifted Zanzibari female vocalists will appear before a panel of judges and perform for this prestigious award — a great opportunity for emerging women singers and lyricists of Unguja and Pemba to promote themselves locally and internationally on a platform which aims to inspire and award local talents.
The competition
There were 8 contestants, and each gave a memorable performance! It was a healthy competition demonstrated through mutual support and a positive attitude, partly conveyed through melodious ululations.
The contestants all attended a pre-competition training workshop, organised and conducted by the Foundation.
The winner
The panel of judges assessed the performance of the 8 singers by a set criteria, and selected Lailat as the worthy recipient of the award. Lailat is an up and coming talented singer; this is her second time competing for a prestigious award, and she showed additional talents in the film ‘The Rite of Awakening’.
The Award was presented at a lively ceremony on the closing night of the Sauti za Busara International Music Festival in the Old Fort, on Sunday 13th of February 2022 at around 8pm. Our congratulations extend to all the participating singers for their outstanding performances. A post-award celebration will be held in honour of all participating artists at Emerson Spice Secret Garden.
